Concertos in Contrast

May 25, 2016

The first CD release of these recordings of showpieces for solo instruments and orchestra. All of the pieces are performed by the gifted members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic with the exception of the Bloch piece, one of Mehta’s earliest Decca recordings in which the solo cellist is János Starker. Here are spirited recordings of Haydn’s […]

Nielsen: Symphony No. 4 ‘The Inextinguishable’; Scriabin: Poem of Ecstasy

April 29, 2016

Two thrilling 20th-century orchestral works, ideally realised in the hands of Zubin Mehta and released for the first time on CD! The volley of timpani as they hurl challenges at each other in the Nielsen is one of the most exciting moments of orchestral music. And Scriabin’s ‘Poème de l’extase’ (Poem of Ecstasy) is one […]

Schumann: Symphonies Nos. 1-4; Manfred & Genoveva Overtures

April 29, 2016

Zubin Mehta has had a long association with the Vienna Philharmonic, conducting them for his first ever recording for Decca (Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony – Decca Eloquence 461 3572) and returning often to conduct them both in their home city and on tour. Collected here for the first time are his complete Decca recordings of Schumann […]

Elgar: Enigma Variations; Cello Concerto

April 29, 2016

Two celebrated recordings in the Decca catalogue, in performances of pathos, sweep and grandeur. Mehta’s ‘Enigma’ has been ranked as among the very finest in a highly competitive catalogue.

Mahler: Symphony No. 5

April 29, 2016

With its beautiful slow movement, ‘Adagietto’, used in the film ‘Death in Venice’, this symphony achieved immortality and the widest listening public. But the rest of it too is wonderful stuff – dramatic, searing, thrilling. This is also one of its most dramatic performances and a benchmark in the discography of this work.

Dvorak: Symphony Nos. 8 & 9

April 29, 2016

One of the most impassioned accounts of the ‘New World Symphony’ to be committed to disc, is generously coupled with the lyrical Eighth Symphony. Outstanding performances all.

Berlioz: Harold in Italy; Bloch: Voice in the Wilderness

April 29, 2016

The first release on CD of these two wonderful performances. The Berlioz is scored for viola and orchestra while the Bloch is written for cello and orchestra and both works represent their heroes (one named, the other unnamed) in ever-changing landscapes. Needless to say, the performances are absolutely first-rate.

Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture; Capriccio Italien; Romeo and Juliet; Marche slave

April 29, 2016

Thrilling performances of four of Tchaikovsky’s orchestral works issued together in these recordings for the first time on CD. Both the ‘1812 Overture’ and the ‘Capriccio Italien’ were demonstration discs in their time and it’s not hard to see why in these larger-than-life performances conducted with enormous panache by Zubin Mehta.

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 ‘Emperor’; Piano Sonatas Nos. 19 & 20

April 29, 2016

A thrilling ‘Emperor’ from Lupu and Mehta is coupled with some solo piano rarities. Both the two Rondos and the two Sonatas included here are among Beethoven’s simpler pieces for piano and, while ever charming, they are constantly played by piano students and on regular piano exam syllabuses.

The Best of Ravel

April 29, 2016

There are few Ravel orchestral compilations – at any price – that could hold a candle to this one. And most of the Mehta material appears on CD for the first time. A wilder ‘La Valse’, a more erotic ‘Daphnis et Chloé’ with its orgiastic finale you’d be hard-pressed to find! And what a magical finale […]

Paganini: Violin Concerto No. 1; R. Strauss: Violin Concerto

April 29, 2016

If you think the three pieces on this disc make odd bedfellows, just listen to the opening of the finale of the Paganini, skip to the finale of the Strauss and then go into the Tchaikovsky Valse-Scherzo. Sparkling wit and virtuosity abound and what’s more, the Paganini receives its first release on CD (outside Taiwan), […]
