About

The first CD release of these recordings of showpieces for solo instruments and orchestra. All of the pieces are performed by the gifted members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic with the exception of the Bloch piece, one of Mehta’s earliest Decca recordings in which the solo cellist is János Starker. Here are spirited recordings of Haydn’s famous Trumpet Concerto and Vivaldi’s ultra-cute Piccolo Concerto plus staggering versions of the two Wieniawski pieces with Glenn Dicterow (whom Mehta took with him to the New York Philharmonic when he moved over!) and a most moving account of the Bloch rhapsody for cello and orchestra.

Reviews

‘exactly the right balance of virtuosity and taste… smouldering intensity, darkly brooding and intense… quite possibly the best performance available [of Schelomo] ClassicsToday.com

‘I have yet to come across better orchestral accompaniment or a superior trumpeter than Thomas Stevens [Haydn] … truly exceptional, powerful and passionate [Bloch] … brilliant [Wieniawski]’ Repertoire
